Political News UK: Future Energies Now!
posted by on Wednesday, December 03, 2008 - 01:40 PM

gfoat writes "Last week, the UK Government introduced the world’s first long term legally binding framework to tackle the dangers of climate change. The Climate Change Act 2008 sets a legally binding target for the UK to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 80% by 2050, compared with 1990 levels. There is also a commitment to reduce emissions by 26% by 2020, but this may be increased. There is still a problem with the inclusion of international aviation and shipping emissions, because if UK companies have higher costs, it could favour countries with lower standards. A carbon budgeting system will set caps on emissions over five year periods. "

Energy Efficiency BRITAIN’S BIGGEST EVER ENERGY SAVING GIVEAWAY
posted by on Thursday, November 27, 2008 - 01:40 PM

gfoat writes "Southern Electric, Gala Bingo and their charity partner Sue Ryder Care are offering consumers the chance to ‘go green and save money’ by giving away 3 million energy saving light bulbs at all Gala clubs and Sue Ryder Care stores across the UK.
If all the bulbs given away are fitted, over £11 million can be saved from people’s energy bills each year across the UK and this in turn will save 39,200 tonnes of CO2 per year. The free energy saving light bulbs are just the start. By simply plugging in the light bulbs, consumers will find out if they have a winning green bulb, which could win them an eco friendly Toyota Prius car or £1,000 to spend at the Southern Electric online store. "

Eco-business UK energy firms urged to explore low-carbon sector
posted by on Thursday, November 20, 2008 - 10:10 AM

gfoat writes "Samir Brikho, Chairman of UK Energy Excellence, will today urge UK businesses to explore international opportunities in the low-carbon energy industry, set to be worth $3 trillion per year by 2050. Speaking at London Oil Week on 19 November, Brikho will highlight how UK expertise in renewable technologies such as wind and wave, nuclear power and evolving carbon capture, as well as a strong skills base in the more traditional oil and gas sectors, can be deployed to drive the global development of low-carbon energy sources. "

Energy Storage UK: The solution for storing solar energy ?
posted by on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 01:38 PM

gfoat writes "ITM Power has the solution for storing solar energy by converting it into clean hydrogen. They can do this now on a scale suitable for individual homes. This would allow householders to be self-sufficient for their power needs. At some time in the next few years, it will be scalable to wind farms. Renewable energy without storage offers no energy security and little in the way of CO2 reduction. Hydrogen can be burnt as a gas in cookers or domestic boilers and as a fuel for cars, trucks and vans. It can also be easily converted to electricity by using a generator or fuel cell. Green Motorsport Fastest Electric Vehicle on Earth!
posted by on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 - 11:28 AM

gfoat writes "The KillaCycle, ridden by Scotty Pollacheck, made drag racing history once again at Bandimere Speedway October 23rd, 2008. 7.89 seconds @ 168 MPH is a new official NEDRA record and makes KillaCycle the world’s quickest electric vehicle of any kind in the quarter mile! This was the very last run down the strip for this season at Bandimere. Lightning struck twice on the mountain as Bill Dube's KillaCycle team set the new mark for top speed in an earlier run that afternoon, 7.955 seconds @ 174.05 MPH. The History Channel recorded it and the footage will air early in 2009. The project highlights the fact that electric powered vehicles do have the performance and efficiency to replace the internal combustion engine. They can do so with energy from renewable sources and without compromising the climate."

Green Motorsport The Electric car
posted by on Friday, September 26, 2008 - 09:50 AM

gfoat writes "Electric vehicles were reported to start back in 1832 when the first crude electric carriage was born! That’s nearly 176 years ago. Then followed a range of more practical vehicles using better batteries which paved the way. France and Britain were the first nations to support the widespread development of the electric vehicle. Over a hundred years ago, an electric vehicle, the Jamais Contente, held the world land speed record when it achieved over 100km/h! The first commercial application was established as a fleet of New York City taxis built by the Electric Carriage and Wagon Company of Philadelphia. At this time, cars were available in many forms - steam power - electric power and gasoline. Currently electric propulsion systems are expensive, but GMS power train is about to change that. Our simple, cost effective design will go into virtually any car under 1800KG, and provide good performance."

Eco-business UN forecasts green job boom
posted by on Thursday, September 25, 2008 - 04:05 AM

gfoat writes "The UN says millions of new jobs will be created globally over the next decades by the development of future energy technologies. Over a million people already work in biofuels, but a UN report says that could increase by 12 million by 2030. The report, 'Green Jobs: Towards Decent Work in a Sustainable, Low-Carbon World', was commissioned and funded by the UN's Environment Programme (Unep). The report is the first comprehensive study on the emergence of a “green economy” and its impact on the world of work. It includes new data that shows a changing pattern of employment in which green jobs are being generated in many sectors and economies around the world as a result of measures to tackle climate change and to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. The report raised some concerns for those involved in the manufacture of biofuels. Read more at bbc news."
