Solar UK: Newbury : £50m solar PV deal

PassivSystems today announced that it has been awarded an exclusive contract with Freetricity to provide the monitoring of a major ’free solar PV’ roll out campaign targeting an initial £50 million portfolio of rooftop solar photovoltaic systems in the UK.

Freetricity will install solar systems on rooftops across the UK and maintain the solar systems once in operation. The irradiance-adjusted solar PV monitoring service from PassivSystems will evaluate what each system is generating, provide alerts of any intermittent faults, and in depth analysis of the portfolio providing the ultimate ‘peace of mind’ package for Freetricity and their funders.

The deal will allow PassivSystems to work with Freetricity and its installation partner, Styles & Wood energy, to fund free residential solar installs and monitoring on up to 1,500 houses a month.

The systems will generate stable 20-year inflation-linked income through the Feed-in-Tariff subsidy scheme offered by the UK government. Homeowners will benefit from having access to the electricity produced by the systems at no additional cost to themselves.

The deal will herald the largest free solar roll-out of its kind in the UK. The new funding deal will create over 500 new jobs in the industry, whilst adding around 30MW of new solar capacity.

PassivSystems CEO, Colin Calder, says “The way people monitor their solar PV panels is the difference between an investment fully realised and an investment exposed to unnecessary risk. The monitoring service provided by PassivSystems will provide consumers with green, sustainable energy and go a long way in reducing rising energy bills. With the energy crisis looming, this partnership couldn’t have come at a better time.”

Commenting on the deal, Paul Williams, CEO of Freetricity said: “'We are very pleased to be partnering with PassivSystems for our new free residential solar install programme which will be the biggest of its kind in the UK. With the constant increases in Energy bills a free solar system enables householders to benefit from a reduction in their yearly energy bill of up to £500 per annum. With the government reviewing Green Tariffs again, now is the time to apply at" http://www.freetricity.net

PassivSystems already provides the largest weather-compensated monitoring solution in the UK, currently monitoring over 20,000 residential systems. Their best-in-class GSM meter management service is designed to support many different meter types and sustain ultra-large portfolios aggregated from many different sources.

A recent study of over 5,500 people by Freetricity revealed that only one in five were aware that companies offered free solar systems in the UK, while 90% agreed that the government should ‘put their weight behind solar’.
