Political News UK: RenewableUK hails IPCC report
posted by on Sunday, April 13, 2014 - 09:44 AM

gfoat writes "Commenting on today's publication of the 5th UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, which calls for a shift away from fossil fuels to focus instead on developing renewable energy sources, RenewableUK’s Deputy Chief Executive Maf Smith said: “When it comes to taking practical action against carbon emissions, the most useful tool in the kit is wind energy. It’s the most developed renewable technology we have, providing more than half the low-carbon electricity we generate in the UK. " RenewableUK is the trade and professional body for the UK wind and marine renewables industries. Formed in 1978, and with nearly 600 corporate members, RenewableUK is the leading renewable energy trade association in the UK: www.renewableuk.com

Political News UN Climate Talks Resume in Bonn
posted by on Thursday, May 30, 2013 - 12:26 PM

gfoat writes "United Nations climate negotiations will resume for a fortnight-long session in Bonn, Germany, from the 3rd to the 14th of June. The talks come as the world recently crossed the threshold of 400ppm concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, at least 50 parts above what scientists suggest is safe (350ppm) and significantly higher than pre-industrial levels (270ppm). The meeting will consist of technical bodies as well as continued long-term talks. This will be the final confirmed negotiation session before the annual UN climate summit is held in Warsaw, Poland, in November."

Political News A STUDY INTO THE ECONOMICS OF GAS AND OFFSHORE WIND
posted by on Tuesday, March 05, 2013 - 11:58 AM

gfoat writes "The report finds that, compared to a future power system more heavily dependent on gas, large-scale investment in offshore wind would impact positively on the UK’s GDP and employment. In the longer term, offshore wind would prevent locking the UK into natural gas usage and imports. UK power sector CO2 emissions in the WIND scenario would be around one-third of those in the GAS scenario in 2030, even though some gas-fired power is needed to provide backup when there is insufficient wind to meet power demand."

gfoat writes "For any of you that don’t already know, next Tuesday is a critical time in the Solar calendar, where anyone who believes in renewable energy, and is horrified by the approach the Government has taken to change the tariffs, has the opportunity to come together, and tell our MP’s how we feel about the situation."

Political News UK Government’s 2009 Budget
posted by on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 - 05:51 AM

gfoat writes "Future Energies welcomes the UK Government’s 2009 Budget, which has set the world’s first legally binding targets to reduce C02 emissions. These must be reduced by 34% by 2020, or 42% if international agreement can be reached, perhaps at Copenhagen in December. Support for the mass production of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles is an important part of the Government’s strategy, but comprehensive action will be needed, involving the existing electric vehicle industry as well as developers of micro renewable energies. "

Political News USA LEADING GLOBAL SHIFT TO GREEN ECONOMY
posted by on Thursday, January 22, 2009 - 10:13 AM

gfoat writes "President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have put forward their vision for a cleaner and safer world. The United States is confronted by two major energy challenges, dependence on foreign oil and global climate change, both of which stem from its current dependence on oil for energy. They are initiating a move away from dependence on oil to investment in diverse sources of clean, secure energy, which will have repercussions throughout the rest of the world."

Political News UK: Future Energies Now!
posted by on Wednesday, December 03, 2008 - 01:40 PM

gfoat writes "Last week, the UK Government introduced the world’s first long term legally binding framework to tackle the dangers of climate change. The Climate Change Act 2008 sets a legally binding target for the UK to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 80% by 2050, compared with 1990 levels. There is also a commitment to reduce emissions by 26% by 2020, but this may be increased. There is still a problem with the inclusion of international aviation and shipping emissions, because if UK companies have higher costs, it could favour countries with lower standards. A carbon budgeting system will set caps on emissions over five year periods. "
